Adam Smith specialises in performing amazing card magic with entertaining stage acts and manipulation tricks that never fails to make audiences gasp, laugh, and clap while demanding for more. Here he shares some insights on key information needed when asked for a quote for a magician and what you should ask when hiring a magician for your event.
What do you need to know from an organiser in order to provide a comprehensive quote?
For us to provide a comprehensive quote to a potential customer, ideally we need the event date, a brief explanation of the type of event they are hosting, the estimated number of guests, and potential venue.
From this, we can give you a quote with no hidden charges.
Ideally an email address too so you have a log of the conversations.
What advice would you give to a customer looking to hire a provider in your area of work?
With regards to booking a Magician or any entertainment, I would always check out their website and testimonials and if you can, please meet them in person, although this is sometimes not easy due to distance or work schedules. I do offer to meet people especially if local to me.
Don’t always go for the cheapest option if you can, as like I have always said, you book the magician for them and not just the tricks. Find a magician that you feel comfortable with, who has humour and can bring crowds together at your event.
For weddings, most Magicians will offer to work at any time during your wedding but my personal opinion on best times is:
During your reception drinks whilst you are having your photos taken, as there is a bit of a lull time, so this would be where people are mixing and mingling, so a magician would then be able to pull people together and break the ice,
Or, at the beginning of your evening reception as you may have additional guests at this time to celebrate your big day.
Please tell us a little bit about how and why you started the business.
It started off originally that I was working in London as a civil engineer and leaving at 5 am every morning and not getting home till around 8 pm, this meant I was missing out on seeing my children grow up and missing their milestone achievements.
I saw a magician perform a trick on me and it got me hooked.
From that moment I decided that I wanted to change career, so I found a top Sleight of hand Magician to train me over the next couple of years.
I was still working full time then going for my lessons, it was exhausting but it worked out in the end and I now do the job I love, and I would not turn the clock back.
I started learning magic at the ripe age of 31 and became a Professional full-time Magician in 2006.
How many people can say that they are doing a job they love with the hours that work around family life?
To me, this is a magical career and I love meeting new people every day.
Please tell us about a booking you've had through Add to Event, how did it go? Would you recommend us to others?
I have had a few events through Add to Event. This is a new thing for me as we have only been using this a short time but I have met some amazing people through this site and had some amazing comments.
The bookings I have done through here are Weddings and Parties - They have all been brilliant so I cannot just pick out one :-)
I would definitely recommend Add to Event to other suppliers and potential customers as it's very easy to use.
The people who run this site have also been extremely helpful when I have asked questions and needed site support on a couple of things.
All round a great place to find suppliers for any type of event.
